Sometimes, it may be possible to preserve your implant posts while the underlying problem is addressed. However, in some cases, there may be no choice but to remove the failed implants. Here’s a closer look at why this might be necessary, how the procedure works, and whether it’s possible to get a replacement.

Why Might a Failed Dental Implant Need to Be Removed?

Dental implant failure is rare, but it can occur for a variety of reasons. Below are some particularly common causes that might warrant the removal of the implant post:

Infection: An untreated infection can lead to significant bone loss around the implant post. Taking the implant post out may be necessary so that the area can heal.

A Damaged Post: As strong as dental implants are, they can still break if you get hit in the face or jaw. Obviously, if a dental implant is broken, keeping it is no longer viable.

Failed Osseointegration: Osseointegration is a natural process where the implant post bonds with the jawbone. If osseointegration is unsuccessful, the post will be unstable, and it will need to be removed to prevent additional bone loss.

How are Dental Implants Removed?

Dental implants are often removed with the help of a tool known as a trough bur. This device can be used to precisely cut a small portion of bone around the implant post, making it easier to take out. Some practices may use a piezo-electric device instead, which cuts the bone with ultrasonic energy. Regardless of the approach taken, your oral surgeon will make it a top priority to remove your implant post while preserving as much of your natural bone tissue as possible.

Can You Get a New Dental Implant After the Removal Process?

In many cases, it is indeed possible to get a new implant post after the failed one has been removed. In certain cases, the new post can be placed right away. In other situations (such as when extensive bone loss has occurred), your oral surgeon may need to wait for the area to heal first.

The prospect of having a failed dental implant removed is not a happy one, but it could be a necessary step for protecting your smile. If you suspect that something is wrong with one of your dental implants, call your oral surgeon immediately so that they can help you figure out the best next steps to take.

About the Author

Dr. Benjamin Keyser is a graduate of the Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
